Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in North Westport, Massachusetts. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our specialty lies in hair testing. We boast testing facilities across all national cities capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or the body suffices. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing options.

Recently, the hair follicle drug test has become a more common approach to drug testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals opt for this method over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests cater to employers with stringent no-drug policies, courts, and individuals under probation. A key advantage is the extended detection period of roughly 90 days, with observed collection making cheating virtually impossible. However, for detecting drug use within 5 days, traditional urine tests still reign supreme.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the strands, offering an extended timeline of drug and alcohol history. If procured from close to the scalp, it offers an approximate three-month window for tracing drugs and alcohol. It's easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample of around 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, apt for screening and confirming. For EtG, add-ons, or tests that exceed 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for accurate measurement. If scalp hair can't be provided, a similar volume of body hair might be used. The term "head hair" solely refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" covers all other types (facial, axillary, and such).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test results involves four core stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the sample's entry into the laboratory's system. It involves verification of proper sample sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entries outside the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs. While it is cost-effective for eliminating drug usage in many samples, positive screenings need confirmation to be legally viable. Presumptively positive samples from Screening require additional verification.

If Screening identifies a sample as presumptively positive, additional hair from the sample is readied for Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from hair at concentrations lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), illustrating the complexity of hair drug testing.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques confirm any positive screening results. All presumptive positive samples are washed if necessary before confirmation. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests monitor drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating on a hair test is extremely challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Reveals usage trends: It indicates drug use patterns over time, not only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become traceable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Higher expense: Hair tests tend to cost more than other testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Factors like hair color and individual growth patterns may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, excluding the scalp follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
