In Northbridge, Massachusetts, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. Specializing in hair-based drug and alcohol tests, our centers nationwide can assist you with required hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are necessary. Our tests can verify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailor options to suit your needs.

The rise of hair follicle testing as a preferred method for drug detection is noticeable. More employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists are favoring hair tests over urine tests. Ideal for zero-tolerance standards, legal scenarios, and probation oversight, this method offers a detection window of up to 90 days, observed collection processes, and resistance to tampering. For recent usage, under 5 days, urine testing is still most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the growing strand, offering a prolonged trace of alcohol and drugs. A sample taken close to the scalp allows for a detection timeframe of up to around 3 months for both alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is uncomplicated, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch strand sample comprising approximately 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation processes. For analyses like EtG, add-ons, or when exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Usage of a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. Should scalp hair be absent, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. The term head hair refers solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory handling of a drug test involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a specimen into a laboratory's framework. It encompasses ensuring the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, generating an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. Screening is an economically efficient method for negating drug presence in most samples; however, a positive result requires validation for court acceptability. Any samples indicating presumptive positives during Screening must have additional confirmation.

On identifying presumptive positives at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration level compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), positioning hair drug screening as an intricate method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. All samples with presumptive positive findings undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection timeframe: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a reduced detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historic data: It can demonstrate a drug use pattern over an extended period, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine analysis in Northbridge, MA, the benefits stand out. Hair tests showcase superior detection accuracy against traditional means.
Benefits include:

  • Extended detection window.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
