Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Norton, Massachusetts. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we excel in hair testing, and offer services in every city nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or body suffices. Tests can discern drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair segmentations.

In recent times, the approach to drug testing increasingly prefers the hair follicle method. A growing number of employers, law professionals, and substance abuse experts mandate this test over standard urine tests. It's favored by zero-tolerance workplaces, legal systems, and probation supervisors. A key advantage of the hair follicle method is its extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, collected under observed conditions, making it nearly tamper-proof. Yet, for detecting use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has evolved into a highly effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures biomarkers of substances within its fibers as it grows, offering a prolonged record of drug and alcohol usage. Gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to three months for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward and somewhat challenging to tamper with, while being simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch specimen comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) taken close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and verification. When testing for EtG, supplementary panels, or above 10 panels, it's advisable to collect 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale to verify the sample weight is suggested. If scalp hair isn’t available, a comparable volume of body hair can be used. By head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (like facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for drug testing results involve Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves introducing the sample into the lab’s system. This task includes checking that the sample is correctly sealed and shipped, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any extra data not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening conducts an initial assessment for drug presence. While Screening is economical for excluding drug usage in most specimens, a positive Screening needs affirmation to be valid legally. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

For samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, the procedure involves isolating drugs from hair but at notably lesser concentrations than seen in other methodologies (like urine or oral fluid), showcasing why hair drug analysis is the most complex type to execute.

For Confirmation of any positive results from screening, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are employed. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with certification under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug screening:

  • Extended detection period: Hair analysis can reveal drug use up to 90 days past, unlike urine tests, which cover shorter timespans.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are challenging to rig, leading to more dependable outcomes.
  • Historical insight: Offers data on substance usage across time, not simply immediate history.

Drawbacks:

  • Doesn't indicate recent use: Drugs become apparent in hair around 5-7 days post-usage.
  • Expense: Hair testing incurs higher costs relative to alternative testing approaches.
  • Result discrepancies: Attributes like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Keep in mind: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", these tests study the hair strands rather than the follicles beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
