For those in Osterville, Massachusetts seeking hair follicle drug testing, Accredited Drug Testing offers a full service. Specializing in hair tests for drugs and alcohol, we have facilities across the country. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. We can assess substances and provide custom testing options through hair analysis.

Hair follicle testing has increasingly become the method of choice for drug testing. It's preferred by employers, the judicial system, and substance abuse experts over urine testing. This methodology supports zero-tolerance policies, providing an unmatched detection window of up to 90 days, making it nearly impossible to falsify results. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as a robust technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive history of substance use by capturing biomarkers in the strands of hair that are growing. When sampled near the scalp, hair can indicate substance usage within a span of up to three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 strands (analogous in thickness to a #2 pencil) from the area nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both preliminary and confirmatory testing. For tests that include EtG, extra add-ons, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a sample weighing 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for specimen weighing is recommended. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair strictly pertain to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other variants (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test is categorized into four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a specimen into the laboratory's framework. This process entails ensuring that the sample has been properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a novel LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any remaining data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is the preliminary evaluation for substance abuse markers. Though cost-efficient, any positive results in Screening necessitate Validation for judicial acceptability. Presumptive positive cases in Screening require subsequent Confirmation.

For samples testing presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is collected from the specimen for the Extraction phase. This step involves the extraction of drugs from hair, which occurs at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), accounting for the challenging nature of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of positive screening results is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. As needed, all presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is subjected to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can track drug consumption for a duration of up to three months, whereas urine tests possess a relatively brief detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to falsification: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, improving the trustworthiness of results.
  • Historical insight: It can illustrate a trend of drug usage over time, beyond mere recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to indicate recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternative testing modalities.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair pigmentation and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle located underneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
