At Accredited Drug Testing, we provide comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Phillipston, Massachusetts. Specializing in hair tests for drug and alcohol detection, our nationwide centers, available in all cities, are equipped to conduct these analyses. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches, either from the scalp or body, is typically required. Our tests offer insights into drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing needs.

Recently, there's been a shift towards utilizing hair follicle drug tests over traditional urine tests. Many industries, including workplaces, legal systems, and substance abuse monitoring, prefer hair tests for improved accuracy. Employers with stringent no-drug policies, courts, and probation services adopt this method due to its extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days. Despite its benefits, urine tests remain more effective for detecting drug usage within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the hair shaft. When gathered from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and can be easily mailed.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is an optimal sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair cannot be provided, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When referencing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is preliminarily processed into the laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample's seal and shipment were done correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient technique to negate drug use in most samples, every positive result needs confirmation to be accepted in legal proceedings. Any samples showing presumptive positives in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations lower than other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening findings is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicated as presumptive positive are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter period of detection.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Supplies historical insight: It displays a timeline of drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot determine recent usage: Substances become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to alternative drug test methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and differences in individual hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the assessment focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Phillipston, MA, hair follicle testing is a superior alternative to traditional urine tests. It offers enhanced detection accuracy, making it a preferred choice for many employers. The extended detection window of up to 90 days allows for a comprehensive analysis of substance use. This reliability is crucial for maintaining workplace safety and integrity.

Benefits of hair testing over urine tests include its capacity to provide more accurate results. While urine tests are effective for short-term detection, hair tests offer insights into long-term substance use history, making them an essential tool for comprehensive drug testing.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Phillipston, MA, appreciate the extended detection window that hair follicle tests provide. With a look-back period of up to 90 days, this method offers a thorough overview of an individual's substance history. This capability is invaluable for decision-making processes, ensuring that employers have a clear view of potential substance use by employees or applicants.

Extended detection offers a significant advantage as it allows for long-term monitoring. This benefit is crucial when assessing an individual’s substance history, providing insights that are not possible with shorter detection methods. It reinforces workplace policies and safeguards company interests.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Phillipston, MA, ensures a high level of security against tampering. Unlike other drug testing methods, hair tests are significantly harder to adulterate, providing reliable and consistent results. This feature protects the integrity of the testing process, giving employers confidence in the accuracy of the results they review.

Reducing the risk of sample tampering is key to maintaining trustworthy results. The hair follicle test's resilience to external manipulation and adulteration makes it a secure choice for drug testing, ensuring the validity of the results obtained and helping maintain a reliable workplace environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
