Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Pinehurst, MA. Specializing in hair-based drug and alcohol assessments, our nationwide facilities can administer these tests. Typically requiring hair lengths of 1.5 to 2 inches, these tests analyze for various substances including alcohol/ETG, providing personalized testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly replaced traditional urine tests in various sectors. Required by employers, court systems, and substance abuse professionals, these tests are vital for those adhering to no-drug-use policies. Their primary advantage includes an extended detection window—up to 90 days—making it difficult to circumvent, although urine tests are yet preferred for recent use detection.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective measure in unveiling drug and alcohol usage. It offers a prolonged view of an individual's alcohol and drug history by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair may exhibit as much as a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively impervious to tampering, and convenient for shipment.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler's scale for measuring the specimen. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" pertains solely to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any pending data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical technique to negate drug use in the majority of cases, a positive finding necessitates confirmation for legal acceptance. Any specimens displaying presumptive positivity in Screening need further confirmation.

Should a sample manifest as presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and poised for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring hair drug testing as a particularly challenging process.

Confirmation involves using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS for verifying any positive screening result. All presumptive positive samples receive a wash, if necessary, prior to confirmation. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a more limited detection period.
  • Challenging to compromise: Cheating a hair drug test is significantly difficult, resulting in more precise findings.
  • Shows historical use: It illustrates drug use patterns across a duration, not just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes close to 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly referenced as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand rather than the root beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
