Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Princeton, Massachusetts. Our expertise lies in hair drug and alcohol testing, and we have facilities nationwide, including Princeton, that can administer these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used for testing. We provide drug detection, alcohol/ETG assessment, and other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing methodologies. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors increasingly favor hair drug testing over conventional urine analysis. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation systems opt for hair testing due to its extended detection duration, typically capturing up to 90 days of drug use. However, urine tests remain more precise for detecting very recent drug use, like in the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected from the scalp, hair can show substance use for up to roughly three months. The collection process is straightforward, it’s challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches in length with around 200 strands (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp provides the optimal 100mg quantity for analysis. For EtG, extended tests, or those surpassing 10 panels, 150mg is preferred. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is advisable. In the absence of scalp hair, a matching volume of body hair might be gathered. Scalp hair indicates hair specifically from the head, whereas body hair pertains to all other kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing for drug testing involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the introductory handling of a sample into the lab's system. This includes checking sample sealing and shipping accuracy, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data input lacking from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary overview for illicit drugs. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient approach to eliminating drug usage in most samples, a positive indication necessitates further verification for legal use. Samples positively indicated during Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample is determined positive presumptively during Screening, further hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, substances are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair analysis the most complex to execute.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab operation from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards alongside the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair testing can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is nearly impossible to manipulate a hair test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Provides usage history: It reveals drug consumption patterns over time, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent intake: Roughly 5-7 days is needed for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing usually costs more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal hair growth differences can alter metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
