Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Whether you require a hair strand drug or alcohol examination, our expertise lies in hair testing, and testing locations are available in every city across the nation to conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or body are sufficient. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate other specific hair testing needs.

In recent times, the approach to drug testing has increasingly included hair follicle drug analysis. More employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine testing. Hair follicle analyses are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The main advantage of a hair follicle test is its extended detection period for drug use, which can reach up to 90 days, conducted in an observed collection manner and is nearly uncheatable. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the strands, hair provides a historical record of substance use. When hair is taken near the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and drug use for a period of up to roughly 3 months. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG add-ons and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we're specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial entry of a sample into a lab's system. This consists of confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most cases, court-admissible results require confirmation of a positive screen. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Drugs are extracted at a much lower concentration in this phase compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening more complex to perform.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods confirm any positive screening outcomes. Prior to confirmation, presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection period.
  • Challenge to falsify: Tampering with a hair drug test is quite difficult, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can demonstrate a trend of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Provincetown, MA, hair follicle tests surpass traditional urine tests due to their superior accuracy and reliability. Compared to urine testing, which often detects drug use within short timeframes, hair follicle tests provide a comprehensive long-term detection window. This ensures more accurate screening and highlights any persistent patterns of substance use.

Extended Detection Window

One key benefit of hair follicle testing in Provincetown, MA is its extended detection window. Unlike urine tests, hair follicle tests can identify drug use over a span of up to 90 days, offering employers a thorough overview of an individual’s substance use history. This broader detection period is invaluable for assessing long-term substance behaviors.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Provincetown, MA is markedly resistant to tampering, making it a reliable choice for accurate results. The testing process significantly reduces the risk of sample adulteration, ensuring that outcomes are both reliable and unquestionable. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
