Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Randolph, Massachusetts. Our expertise lies in hair and alcohol testing, with facilities across all cities Nationwide prepared to administer a hair test. Typically, a person must have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the head or body. Hair tests are available for drug and alcohol/ETG analysis, along with other specialized options.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has become more prevalent in recent years as they have been increasingly incorporated into drug testing methods. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests cater to workplaces with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal bodies, and those on probation. The major advantage of a hair follicle drug test is an extended detection period, reaching up to 90 days. This process is observed, rendering it nearly tamper-proof. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the preferred choice for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for revealing drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a broad history of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers a potential 3-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. It's straightforward to gather, hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample for both screening and affirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is suggested. It's advisable to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable quantity of body hair may be taken. "Head hair" pertains exclusively to scalp hair. "Body hair" indicates all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in processing a drug test result in the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab's system. This process ensures the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, allocates a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data recording absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid assessment for drug usage. While cost-effective, a positive Screening result requires confirmation to hold in legal settings. Any samples with presumptive positive results in Screening demand further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the primary specimen for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at substantially lower concentrations than in other tests (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to hair drug screening's complexity.

Any confirmed positive result from Screening undergoes further Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning through Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug screens can reveal substance use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection span offered by urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: The complexity of manipulating a hair drug test makes results more dependable.
  • Tracks historical usage: It maps a history of substance use patterns over time, as opposed to focusing solely on recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent use: A delay of approximately 5-7 days exists before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations tend to incur higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can vary due to factors like hair color and individual growth disparities.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this test analyzes the hair strand itself, not the underlying follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
