Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Rowe, Massachusetts. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we are specialists in hair testing with centers nationwide where you can undertake a hair test. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or potentially from body hair. Our hair tests can determine the use of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer custom testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing procedures. Employers, legal institutions, and Substance Abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair tests over urine tests. Employers with strict drug use policies, the judiciary, and probation officers prefer this method due to its extended detection window, which can reflect up to 90 days of drug use, collected under supervision, and is almost infallible against evasion. For recent use, within the past 5 days, urinalysis remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand, hair offers a comprehensive view of alcohol and other drugs over an extended period. When obtained near the scalp, hair can provide an up-to-3-month detection range for substances. Collection is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and shipping is convenient.

A sample consisting of 1.5 inches or about 200 strands of hair (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample size for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, the same quantity of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in laboratory drug test processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, rapid evaluation for abusive drugs. Although Screening is an economical way to rule out drug use for most samples, any positive screen requires confirmation to be legally acceptable. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

When a sample shows presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation if necessary. The laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug use, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing forms.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test is actually performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
