Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Sagamore, Massachusetts. For those in need of alcohol or drug testing via hair samples, we specialize in these tests and have facilities across all U.S. cities. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required for testing. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offers tailored testing solutions.

Nowadays, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals favor hair tests over conventional urine analysis. Organizations with strict drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals often choose hair tests to benefit from their extended detection period of up to 90 days, ensured by an observed collection process, making them hard to manipulate. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a prolonged record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When the sample is gathered near the scalp, it can detect alcohol and drugs for up to roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

Acquiring a 1.5-inch piece consisting of about 200 hairs (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil's diameter) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, it’s advisable to use 150mg of the specimen. It's advisable to use a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be absent, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary procedures involved in the lab processing of a drug analysis include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample’s initial entry into the laboratory framework. This step ensures that the sample was adequately sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional required data entry beyond what an electronic chain of custody system offers.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is an efficient approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result must undergo confirmation to be valid for court proceedings. Any sample with a presumptively positive outcome in Screening requires additional confirmation.

In cases where the sample shows a presumptive positive result during Screening, more hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from the hair at significantly lower amounts compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva), which makes hair drug analysis the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirming any positive Screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive cases are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended monitoring window: Hair drug testing can detect substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine testing offers a shorter monitoring period.
  • Increased difficulty in falsification: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Chronological data availability: It shows a trend of substance use over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Substances only become noticeable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Aspects like hair pigmentation and individual hair growth differences might influence the concentration of substance metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the actual test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Sagamore, MA, the edge of hair follicle testing over urine tests is evident. Hair tests offer unmatched accuracy and reliability across several situations.

The most significant advantage is the longer detection window that hair tests provide, ensuring that employers can rely on results that reflect extended substance use history, unlike urine tests which show recent use.

The capability of hair follicle testing to detect drug use over a 90-day period provides a deep insight into an individual's substance consumption.

Employers in Sagamore, MA benefit from this comprehensive view, aiding in informed decision-making regarding potential hires and current employees.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
