Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening throughout Shawsheen Village, Massachusetts. If you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our centers, available in cities nationwide, are equipped to conduct them. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Our hair tests can check for substances, alcohol/ETG, or be configured for specific needs.

In recent times, there's been a shift toward using hair follicle drug testing more frequently. Many employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse specialists now prefer this method over the traditional urine examination. Companies with strict drug policies, courts, and probationary officers rely on it due to its extended detection period of up to 90 days, secure sample collection, and resistance to tampering. However, for recent drug use, within the last five days, urine testing remains the go-to method.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand fibers as they grow. When hair samples are collected near the scalp, they can offer a detection window of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, an optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to use 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a similar amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically means scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is processed into a laboratory system. This step includes ensuring the sample is sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry if not already provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drug abuse detection. While Screening is a budget-friendly approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and processed for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methods to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, gets reviewed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to tamper: Hair drug tests are highly resistant to tampering, providing more reliable results.
  • Tracks historical use: It shows a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Shawsheen Village, MA, hair follicle tests offer clear advantages over urine tests. They excel in detection accuracy and stand as a more reliable measure. While urine tests can reflect recent usage, hair tests offer long-term substance history, revealing patterns over time.

The hair testing method is less invasive and much harder to tamper with. In contrast to urine tests, these tests provide more comprehensive insights, crucial for employers seeking an accurate understanding of drug use among employees or candidates.

Extended Detection Window

Shawsheen Village, MA residents benefit from the extended detection window of hair follicle tests. These tests can reveal substance use spanning up to 90 days. Such a wide timeframe offers employers detailed substance insights that urine tests might miss.

Employers and decision-makers gain a clear picture of an individual’s drug use history. This long window allows for evaluation of sustained behaviors rather than isolated events, contributing to more informed decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing is a trusted method in Shawsheen Village, MA because of its tamper-resistant nature. These tests significantly diminish the risk of sample adulteration, offering results that are both reliable and trustworthy.

Unlike urine tests, where samples can be manipulated, hair samples provide conclusive insights into substance use. Such resistance to tampering reinforces the credibility of testing results in various applications, including workplaces and legal settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
