Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Somerset, Massachusetts. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is highly skilled in hair testing with centers across all cities Nationwide ready to perform the procedure. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary for testing. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to other bespoke testing needs.

In recent times, drug testing methodologies have increasingly relied on hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, the judicial system, and probation services. Their primary advantage is a longer detection window up to 90 days, collected under observation, offering high resistance to tampering. For recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The perception of hair testing as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol usage has grown. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of its growth, offering a longer-term record of alcohol and other drug consumption. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month period of substance use detection. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximating the size of a #2 pencil) from close to the scalp can yield 100mg, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or more than 10 test panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It's preferable to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four essential phases in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the first processing of a sample into a lab's system. This involves verifying the correct sealing and shipment of the sample, tagging a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data requirements absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is an economical method to rule out drug use for most samples, legal admissibility requires confirmation of a positive screen. Any samples marked presumptively positive in Screening mandate an additional confirmation.

Upon a sample's presumptive positivity at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen readying for Extraction. This phase involves removing drugs from hair at considerably lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), presenting hair drug screening as the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of a positive Screening outcome occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory procedure undergoes assessment under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can catch drug use up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenge to deceive: Evading a hair drug test is incredibly tough, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It shows a trend of drug use over duration, unlike just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of indicating recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests cost more relative to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variation can influence the amount of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
