Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Southwick, Massachusetts. When in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair testing, with facilities in all cities across the US ready to carry out such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, the approach to drug screening has increasingly involved hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine screenings. Hair follicle tests are employed by employers upholding strict drug policies, judicial systems, and those on probation. Their main advantage is a longer drug use detection timeframe, generally up to 90 days, with secured collection ensuring minimal chances of tampering. Nonetheless, urine tests remain most accurate for drug use detection within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strands as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 90-day detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and can be easily transported.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler's scale. If hair from the scalp cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. Scalp hair refers specifically to head hair, whereas body hair includes all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of producing a drug test outcome in the lab consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial entry of a sample into the laboratory's system. This stage comprises verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug consumption in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

For samples showing a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at lesser concentrations than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging procedure to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with a presumptive positive result are washed before confirmation when necessary. Each step, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can sense drug intake for up to three months, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection duration.
  • Resistant to tampering: Cheat attempts on hair drug tests are tough, ensuring more trustworthy outcomes.
  • Tracks history: These tests demonstrate a timeline of drug consumption rather than merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: Drugs typically become traceable in hair around 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing modalities.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
