In Sturbridge, Massachusetts, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair testing for drugs and alcohol, our centers are available across all cities nationwide. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head, or body hair, is required. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer customized testing solutions.

The preference for hair follicle drug testing has surged in recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now often choose hair drug tests over the conventional urine method. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and those on probation favor this method for its extensive detection period—usually up to 90 days—and its resistance to tampering, although urine tests remain the best measure for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the growing hair fibers, hair offers a comprehensive history of drug and alcohol use. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use over a period of up to 3 months. It is easy to collect, less prone to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp equates to 100mg of hair — the optimal amount for analysis. For EtG, additional tests, and/or more than 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. It’s best to weigh the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a corresponding quantity of body hair can be taken. "Head hair" specifically means scalp hair; "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug test results encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary check for drug abuse. While it is a cost-efficient way to eliminate drug usage in most cases, a positive screen requires further validation to be court-admissible. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening need a secondary confirmation.

In the event of a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is obtained from the original specimen for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted at significantly lower concentrations than those found through other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire lab procedure, spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, which enhances the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides historical data: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, beyond recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair about 5-7 days after use.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
