Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions in Uxbridge, Massachusetts. When a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this domain, featuring testing sites across every city nationwide for easy hair test administration. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body can be used. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent for drug testing. This method is increasingly preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests appeal to employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation programs due to their extended detection period, nearly foolproof nature, and monitored collection method, covering drug use over an impressive 90-day window. Yet, for detecting very recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests still provide optimal accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an efficient means for detecting alcohol and drug use. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of its growing strand, offering an extended history of substance usage. When cut close to the scalp, it allows approximately a 3-month detection range for alcohol and drugs. Hair is simple to collect, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil), closest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and verification. For EtG analyses, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample weighing 150mg is advised. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent weight of body hair may be collected. “Head hair” refers specifically to scalp hair, while “body hair” encompasses all other kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of processing a sample within a lab’s system. This phase ensures the sample's sealing and shipping integrity, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any manual data inputs not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary check for drug abuse, being a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in the majority of cases, yet any positive screening requires confirmation for legality. Samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening require a secondary verification.

For samples with a suspect positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair testing poses greater challenges compared to other methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive result in Screening is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter range.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It reflects a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests tend to cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variations in factors like hair color and personal hair growth affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the actual test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Uxbridge, MA offers significant advantages over traditional urine tests. Superior detection accuracy makes it a preferred choice for employers and authorities. Urine tests may miss drug usage after a short period, but hair testing reliably detects substances for up to 90 days. This extended window provides a more comprehensive assessment of an individual's drug history, offering a broader scope for analysis and judgment.

Unlike urine tests, which are susceptible to tampering, hair follicle tests in Uxbridge, MA offer unmatched reliability. Employers opting for hair testing benefit from its difficulty to deceive, as the test involves a simple hair collection. This method's capability to detect a wide range of substances over a lengthy period ensures confidence in test results, safeguarding workplace integrity and compliance with drug-free policies.

Extended Detection Window

One clear benefit of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window. In Uxbridge, MA, this method can analyze drug use over a period of up to 90 days. For employers, this means gaining a comprehensive understanding of a candidate or employee's substance use history, giving a clearer picture than what urine tests, limited to a few days' detection, can offer.

Hair follicle testing provides a unique advantage in Uxbridge, MA, by offering a long-term view of substance use. While urine can only track recent use, hair assessments extend the perspective to three months, offering critical insights into longer-term patterns of behavior. This helps employers make better-informed hiring decisions, promoting workplace safety and reliability.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Uxbridge, MA, hair follicle tests stand out for their tamper-resistant nature. Unlike other testing methods, this approach minimizes the risk of adulteration. Hair samples are collected and analyzed in a manner that is exceedingly difficult to manipulate, ensuring results are both trustworthy and accurate, providing peace of mind for employers relying on these tests for critical hiring and compliance decisions.

The integrity of hair follicle testing is unmatched in Uxbridge, MA. By significantly reducing the possibility of tampering, hair tests offer employers a more reliable method of evaluating potential drug use. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
