Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Wayland, Massachusetts. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, offering testing centers in every city nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is used. Hair tests can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair testing over the traditional urine test. This type of test is ideal for organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal oversight, and probation compliance. Its main advantage is a longer detection period of up to 90 days, ensuring accurate, cheat-proof results. However, urine tests remain accurate for detecting recent use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair sampling is now recognized as an effective method for spotting drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a lengthy timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair's growing strands. When clipped near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use within roughly a three-month period. Collection is easy, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, composed of approximately 200 hair strands (about the dimensions of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, optimal for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or screenings beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equal volume of body hair can be utilized. By head hair, we indicate only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test follows four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first phase, integrating a sample into the laboratory’s system. This phase ensures the sample's seal and proper shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any outstanding data entries not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While it is a cost-efficient approach to dismiss drug consumption in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples indicating presumed positives in Screening mandate further confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is collected from the original specimen for Extraction. This phase retrieves drugs from hair at a much-reduced concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing a challenging methodology.

Confirmation for any positive screen is executed using methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review, aligning with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: It's notably tough to falsify a hair drug test, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Historical insights: It can illustrate a drug use pattern over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal variations in growth can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand instead of the follicle attached under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
