In West Boylston, MA, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, we have specialized in hair testing. With testing centers available nationwide, hair samples can be collected in any city. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Options include analyzing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized tests.

Increasingly, hair follicle drug tests are preferred for drug screening. Many employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse specialists favor these over traditional urine tests. Embraced by employers with stringent anti-drug policies, courts, and probationers, the key advantage of hair tests lies in their extended drug detection period, up to 90 days. This process, monitored closely, is resistant to circumvention. Yet, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, offers resistance to tampering, and is simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to have 150mg of the specimen. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be collected. When we mention head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in laboratory analysis of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry that an electronic chain of custody system might not cover.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive screening must be confirmed to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. At this stage, substances are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The full laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a narrower detection range.
  • Resistant to manipulation: It is exceedingly hard to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the veracity of the results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can map a drug usage trend over time, beyond mere recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: It generally takes around 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In West Boylston, MA, hair follicle testing showcases several advantages over traditional urine tests. Unlike urine tests, hair testing excels with its extended detection period, capturing a longer history of substance use. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
