Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in West Bridgewater, MA. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis and provides testing centers in cities across the nation where hair tests can be conducted. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be used. Analyzing hair samples can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing options.

In recent times, drug testing techniques have increasingly included hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and professionals in substance abuse now opt for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug use policies, courts, and individuals on probation often utilize hair follicle drug tests. A significant advantage of this testing method is its extended detection period, which typically spans up to 90 days, coupled with an observed collection method that is nearly impossible to manipulate. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When hair is obtained from close proximity to the scalp, it can offer a detection window of up to three months for both alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A section of 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) from nearest the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and validation. In cases requiring EtG, additional testing, and/or tests beyond the standard 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent portion of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory system. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient means of excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be acceptable in court. Any samples that are provisionally positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result in the Screening stage, further hair is obtained from the original sample for the Extraction process. At this juncture, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

To confirm any positive results from screening, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are employed. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is thoroughly vetted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a smaller detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus yielding more reliable results.
  • Reveals usage history: It can illustrate a pattern of drug consumption over time, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variability in results: Influences such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
