Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Westport, Massachusetts. When you require a drug or alcohol test using a hair sample, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to choice, with specialized centers across various cities nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body suffices. Hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly prevalent in drug testing procedures. Employers, judicial systems, and addiction treatment professionals are opting for hair testing over conventional urine tests. Such tests are favored by employers enforcing strict drug-free policies, courts, and individuals under probationary terms. Their significant advantage lies in their extensive drug detection window of up to 90 days, an observed collection method, and their near immunity to tampering. Nonetheless, for drug use detection within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a highly effective method for revealing drug and alcohol consumption. It captures biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand, offering a lengthy history of substance use. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reflect drug and alcohol usage over an estimated 3-month period. It is also straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) cut closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the ideal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, enhancements, and/or assessments above 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system, ensuring that the sample is properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional required data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening acts as an initial rapid evaluation for drugs. While it is a cost-effective way to rule out drug use in many samples, a positive screen requires verification for court admissibility. Samples indicated as presumptively positive during Screening need subsequent validation.

When a sample shows as presumptively positive in Screening, extra hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive Screen result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to Confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thus ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical patterns: It can show a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Westport, MA, hair follicle testing offers clear advantages over urine tests. Hair samples provide a much more extensive detection history, capturing up to 90 days of drug use compared to the short window that urine samples afford.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
