Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Worthington, Massachusetts. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, Accredited Drug Testing operates centers across all U.S. cities capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed, whether from the head or body. Hair testing can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Recently, the trend has shifted towards employing hair follicle drug tests more often within drug testing methodologies. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors are opting for hair tests instead of standard urine analyses. Hair follicle drug screenings are favored by those enforcing strict no-drug usage, legal systems, and probationary oversight due to their extended detection capability—generally up to 90 days—performed under observation, and being almost foolproof against tampering. Despite this, urine tests remain preferred for recent drug usage detection within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

The method of hair examination has garnered a reputation as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair can chronicle an extended history of substance use, with biomarkers encapsulated in the strands as they grow. When gathered close to the scalp, analysis of hair can reveal drug and alcohol presence over a span of nearly three months. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising around 200 strands (equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or any analysis exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is advisable. Should scalp hair be missing, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When describing head hair, it refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair includes any other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The drug testing lab process is comprised of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is where a sample initially enters a laboratory's framework. This process involves confirming the sample is sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and carrying out any necessary extra data entry if not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary review for substance abuse. While Screening efficiently rules out drug use in most cases at a lower cost, a positive outcome must be verified for legal acceptance. Samples that test positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample is preliminarily positive during Screening, more hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn out from the hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex methodology.

To validate any positive screening results, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are employed. All suspected positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: Deceiving a hair drug test is particularly hard, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Records past usage: Offers insights into substance consumption patterns over time rather than just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to sense recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally pricier than other methodologies.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair hue and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug residues in hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests”, the test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Excels Hair follicle testing outshines urine testing in precision and reliability. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair testing boasts a much longer detection window and is less susceptible to manipulation. This method ensures the detection of a broader history of substance use, offering a more comprehensive analysis absent in urine-based tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
