Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Alba, Michigan. For necessities such as a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair examinations, with facilities available across all U.S. cities to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or elsewhere on the body is required. Hair can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored options.

Recently, the trend in drug testing methods has increasingly included hair follicle analysis. Numerous employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair testing over standard urine evaluations. Hair follicle testing is implemented by employers with stringent drug policies, the judicial system, and probation individuals. A key advantage of hair testing is the extended detection timeframe for drug intake, reaching up to 90 days, with samples collected under observation, making manipulation nearly impossible. Nevertheless, for recent drug use detection within the past five days, urine testing remains most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Seen as a strong method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing captures a long-term history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair. Collected near the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (about #2 pencil size) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not feasible, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When we talk about head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test processing involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step, integrating a sample into the lab's system. It verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid check for drug misuse. While a cost-effective approach to negate drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court acceptance. Any presumptive positive samples in Screening need secondary confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen for further Extraction. Drugs are then extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of positive screening uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the complete lab process is reviewed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insights: It offers a drug usage pattern over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Detection of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can affect drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
