Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bach, Michigan. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing with nationwide centers capable of conducting these tests. Usually, you need about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly utilized hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer these over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers favor them. The main advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection period, up to 90 days, with a monitored collection process, making them almost cheat-proof. However, for identifying drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing plays a pivotal role in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. This method offers an extended timeline of substance use, as the fibers of the hair strand capture biomarkers over time. When the sample is taken close to the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol intake for around three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising about 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, considered the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, extensions, and/or exams exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It's recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair pertain only to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory processing comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary introduction of a sample into a laboratory system. It involves confirming the sample's proper seal and delivery, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any necessary data input not covered by an electronic custody chain.

Screening entails a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While it offers a cost-effective means of eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for judicial admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

Should Screening indicate a presumptive positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for further investigation during Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at reduced concentrations compared to alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. Presumptive positive samples are washed pre-confirmation when required. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing identifies drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair drug test results are more reliable due to the difficulty of tampering.
  • Insightful historical data: This method outlines a long-term drug use pattern rather than indicating recent usage alone.

Limitations:

  • Delay in detecting recent use: Drugs become noticeable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: The concentration of drug metabolites in hair may vary due to hair color and individual growth differences.

Note: Although often dubbed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
