Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

Recently, there has been a shift towards using hair follicle tests for drug detection. These tests are now favored by employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts over typical urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation officers frequently choose hair follicle tests for their extended detection window of up to 90 days and the difficulty of tampering. However, urine tests remain more effective for identifying drug use in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair, it provides a lengthy history of substance use. When hair is gathered near the scalp, it reveals up to a three-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is easy, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

To secure the ideal sample for screening and confirmation, a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from close to the scalp is needed to obtain 100mg of hair. For tests like EtG or those exceeding 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg is suggested. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for accuracy. If scalp hair can’t be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" pertains to all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of integrating a sample into the laboratory's system. This step involves ensuring the sample's secure sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary review for drug abuse, serving as a cost-effective method for eliminating drug usage in most samples. However, a positive result in Screening requires subsequent confirmation for court admissibility. Any sample deemed presumptive positive in Screening mandates additional verification.

For a presumptive positive Screening result, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcomes is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning through Confirmation is conducted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair program and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify substance use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter span.
  • Resistant to manipulation: Hair drug tests are challenging to falsify, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: They outline a usage pattern over time rather than indicating only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Higher cost: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.
