Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Bendon, Michigan. If you're seeking reliable hair drug or alcohol analysis, our specialty lies in hair testing, with facilities across various cities nationwide ready to conduct your test. A hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown of your head or other body hair is generally required. These tests can assess drug usage, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing requirements.

Hair follicle testing has become an increasingly popular method for drug screening lately. This preference over traditional urine testing is seen among employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts. It's favored in scenarios demanding zero drug tolerance policies, legal compliance, or probation conditions. A significant advantage is its extended detection window for drug usage, which can trace back up to 90 days, employs an observed collection process, and is notably difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now acknowledged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It is recommended to assess the specimen's weight on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be collected, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a specimen within a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary examination for substances of abuse. Though Screening offers an economical means to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive result requires validation to be permissible in legal contexts. Samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

When a specimen appears presumptively positive in the Screening stage, further hair is taken from the initial collection and prepared for Extraction. Here, substances are extracted from hair at much diminished concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can trace drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are resistant to tampering, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can display a user's substance use pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to show recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result inconsistency: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis concerns the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why opt for hair follicle over traditional urine tests in Bendon, MI? The answer lies in superior detection accuracy and consistency. Unlike urine tests, hair testing offers a reliable reading across a broader detection window. The process yields results that are more challenging to alter or dilute, offering true insight into an individual’s substance history.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Bendon, MI, offers a remarkable detection window, tracing drug use up to 90 days. This expansive timeframe gives employers a thorough understanding of an individual's engagement with substances, far exceeding the capabilities of traditional tests. It enables informed decision-making, fostering safer work environments.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the greatest advantages of hair follicle testing in Bendon, MI, is its tamper-resistant nature. This method drastically minimizes the possibility of sample adulteration. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
