In Berville, Michigan, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you're in need of testing for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair analysis and operates facilities in cities across the country capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body are used in most scenarios. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Hair follicle drug tests have grown more common in recent years as a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often favor hair testing over the traditional urine analysis. A key advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their longer detection window, usually up to 90 days, making them hard to tamper with. For identifying recent drug use within the last 5 days, however, urine tests remain the gold standard for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. With the ability to preserve biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand, it delivers an extended timeline of alcohol and other drugs presence. When gathered from the scalp, hair offers up to about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It's straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, deemed optimal for screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It's best to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, equivalent body hair can be gathered. In mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test process consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within the lab’s system. This step ensures proper sealing and shipping, generates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary, efficient test for drug traces. Although cost-effective for dismissing drug use in most cases, a positive screening needs confirmation to be legally valid. Samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is drawn from the initial batch to prepare for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration than seen in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair testing is the most complex methodology to execute.

Positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter period for detection.
  • High resistance to falsification: It's exceptionally difficult to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring the results remain reliable.
  • Exhibits historical usage: It showcases a timeline of drug consumption rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Undetected recent usage: Drugs appear in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Price: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to alternate testing methods.
  • Outcome variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests", it is the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp, that undergoes analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
