Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle substance screening in Birch Run, Michigan. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol test, we focus on hair analysis, with available testing locations in cities across the nation to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head’s crown or body is required. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific testing needs.

Recently, the prevalence of hair follicle drug tests has increased as an alternative method of substance screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair testing over traditional urine analysis. Organizations with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation scenarios utilize it for its extended detection period, typically up to 90 days, with a monitored collection process, making it hard to tamper with. However, urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, offering an extended timeline for detecting alcohol and other substances. When sourced near the scalp, hair can provide an approximate 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

An ideal sample for screening and confirmation is a 1.5-inch piece consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately pencil-sized, #2), yielding 100mg of hair. For EtG, additional procedures, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. Head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in processing a drug test result in the laboratory encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s system. This process entails confirming proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry required beyond an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, efficient manner of checking for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach to dismiss drug usage in most samples, any positive screen necessitates confirmation to be court-admissible. Presumptive positive samples identified during Screening need a secondary confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening as one of the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory process is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for a maximum of 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a narrower detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to cheat, yielding more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a drug usage trend over time, rather than solely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: The test, while frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
