Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Bridgman, Michigan. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair evaluations, with facilities in all cities across the country equipped to conduct such tests. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required from the head or body. Hair evaluations can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other personalized testing solutions.

Recently, the inclusion of hair follicle assessments in drug testing has become more common. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and professionals in Substance Abuse are now favoring hair drug tests over traditional urine analyses. Companies with strict no-drug-use policies, court systems, and probation services often rely on hair follicle tests. The main advantage of hair testing is its extended detection timeline, reaching up to 90 days. These tests are gathered under supervision and are nearly fraud-proof. However, for identifying drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can provide an extended record of alcohol and substances by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to about a 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

For optimal screening and confirmation, a 1.5-inch cut of around 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp is ideal, equating to 100mg of hair. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. In instances where scalp hair is absent, an equivalent portion of body hair may be collected. Note that head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where a sample is initially processed into the lab system. This process ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for the presence of drugs. Although Screening is a cost-effective means to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for it to be valid in legal settings. Samples testing presumptively positive during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at Screening, additional hair is extracted for the Extraction process. Drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most intricate method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples may be cleansed before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, thus increasing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: Provides a timeline of drug consumption over a period, not just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Lacks immediate detection: It may take approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests commonly cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variance: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
