Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Brooklyn, Michigan. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in the field and offers testing locations across various cities nationwide to conduct hair testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required in most situations. Hair testing can be used to analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailor for customized requirements.

Over the past years, the inclination towards hair follicle drug testing has increased. They are now commonly required by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors as an alternative to regular urine tests. Organizations with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers often prefer hair follicle drug tests. This method offers a notable advantage by providing a longer detection window of up to 90 days, is observed during collection, and is nearly impossible to falsify. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair stores a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When extracted near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panel counts above 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We propose measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unattainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other hair types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the lab's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out any additional data entry that an electronic chain of custody system doesn't cover.

Screening involves a rapid initial assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be permissible in legal proceedings. Any samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening need secondary confirmation.

In the event a sample appears presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), hence hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples considered presumptive positive are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: It is quite challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a usage pattern over time rather than just assessing recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing options.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
