Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Cassopolis, Michigan. Should you require a hair-based drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise lies in hair testing. We have facilities across all U.S. cities to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body can be used for evaluation. Hair tests can be set to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific options.

Recently, drug testing techniques have increasingly incorporated the hair follicle method. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair testing over conventional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug stances, legal bodies, and probation monitors predominantly use hair follicle assessments, which offer a broader drug detection timeframe—typically up to 90 days. They involve direct observation to prevent tampering and provide higher accuracy for drug use assessments compared to other methods. Nonetheless, for detecting recent usage within the past five days, urine testing remains superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an elongated record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection span of up to about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to fake, and effortless to ship.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable volume of body hair can be collected. When speaking of head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair alone. Body hair pertains to all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The quartet of fundamental stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample in a lab’s system, including verifying that it was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for court validity. Any samples presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a much-reduced concentration than in other forms (ex. urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is most challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter window.
  • Challenging to cheat: It is very hard to cheat a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical insight: It can discern a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: There's a 5-7 day period before drugs are detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing solutions.
  • Result variance: Hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the assessment examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
