In Climax, Michigan, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle assessments. Whether for drugs or alcohol detection, this center excels in hair analysis, boasting nationwide facilities to administer these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are required. Hair analysis can reveal drugs, alcohol, or other custom testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle testing has grown in popularity for drug screenings, replacing standard urine tests in many cases. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers often prefer hair tests for their extended detection period of up to 90 days. These tests are conducted under observation, making them nearly impossible to cheat, yet urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use.

What it is, How it works

The assessment of hair has increasingly been acknowledged as an effective means for identifying the intake of substances such as drugs and alcohol. By embedding biomarkers within the structure of the hair as it grows, hair offers an extended overview of substance use. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal up to a 3-month detection window for substances like alcohol and other drugs. Hair sampling is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

Taking a 1.5-inch portion comprising around 200 hairs (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair can't be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other hair types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process consists of four major stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a specimen into a lab’s framework. This process confirms that the specimen was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns it an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary rapid analysis for drug use. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method for negating drug usage within most samples, any positive findings need confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

When Screening indicates a presumptive positive result, additional hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations significantly lower than those in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample is cleansed before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accreditation according to ISO/IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • High resistance to falsification: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical usage insight: It offers an overview of drug usage patterns over time, beyond solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect very recent use: Drugs typically require 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing options.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual growth differences can affect drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicles beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Climax, MI, hair follicle testing outshines traditional urine tests with its heightened accuracy and reliability. Hair tests detect substances over more extended periods, offering a more complete view of drug history than urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
