Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Copper City, Michigan. Whether it's for detecting drugs or alcohol use, our centers are available nationwide, including every city, ready to conduct hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Our tests can identify substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer customizable testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests are becoming a common method for screening, gaining preference over traditional urine tests by various employers, courts, and substance abuse experts. They're favored for their longer detection window of up to 90 days. Ideal for organizations with strict drug policies, legal settings, and probationers, these tests are observed during collection and hard to falsify. Yet, urine tests remain optimal for detecting very recent use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair offers up to nearly a 3-month timeframe for detecting drugs and alcohol. Collection is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and shipping is convenient.

A 1.5-inch hair sample equivalent to about 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's girth) nearest the scalp should yield 100mg, which is the preferred amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested to measure the sample weight. In cases where scalp hair is unobtainable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be substituted. By scalp hair, we mean hair found on the head. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Summary

The lab processes a test result through four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The first step, Accessioning, involves entering the sample into the lab system. It comprises ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched appropriately, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra information not included by the digital custody chain system.

Screening provides an initial, rapid assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is a cost-efficient strategy to exclude drug use in most specimens, a positive result must be validated for legal admissibility. Samples indicating a preliminary positive during Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

When Screening shows a presumptive positive, extra hair is retrieved from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive are cleaned before Confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation holds review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Hair drug test benefits:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, compared with urine tests that detect more recent use.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Hair drug tests are highly resistant to falsification, ensuring greater accuracy.
  • Reveals usage history: It can illustrate a drug usage pattern over time, rather than just reflecting recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Detection in hair requires around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations typically cost more than alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual variations in growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", this examination focuses on analyzing the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle tests surpass traditional urine tests due to their superior accuracy and reliability. They detect a wider range of substances over a longer period, making them a preferred choice among Copper City, MI employers.

The long detection window of hair tests provides a more comprehensive picture of an individual's substance use, leaving urine tests behind in terms of detailed reporting and insight.

Extended Detection Window

With a detection window reaching up to 90 days, hair follicle testing offers unmatched insight into drug history. This extended timeframe is invaluable in Copper City, MI for understanding long-term substance use patterns.

Employers gain a substantial advantage in evaluating applicant or employee substance use over a longer span, creating a safer and more informed workplace environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
