In Corunna, Michigan, Accredited Drug Testing offers full-spectrum hair follicle drug tests. Whether your need is for hair-based drug or alcohol assessment, our team excels in delivering these tests. We have facilities nationwide to conduct hair testing. Typically, hair needed for testing is around 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown of your head but other body hair can be utilized. Our hair tests cater to drugs, alcohol/ETG, or personalized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity over other methods. Various employers, court systems, and professionals dealing with substance abuse now favor hair testing over urine tests. This method is preferred by organizations enforcing strict no-drug policies and those managing probation terms. The main advantage is its significant detection period, reaching up to 90 days. While results are collected under supervision, making it hard to cheat, urine tests are still considered more precise for drug use detection within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as they grow. When hair is collected close to the scalp, it can offer a detection period of nearly 3 months for alcohol and drug usage. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of around 1.5 inches comprising 200 strands of hair (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, an optimal sample for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equal quantity of body hair can be used instead. References to head hair specifically pertain to scalp hair. The term body hair covers all other types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for a drug test result involves four critical steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab system. This step includes ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial rapid check for substances of abuse. Although Screening is economically efficient for ruling out drug use across most samples, confirmation is essential for a positive screen to be court-admissible. Samples that are initially positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If the Screening phase yields a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Within this stage, drug extraction from hair is performed at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is what makes hair drug testing the most complex technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation by ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • High security against manipulation: The likelihood of cheating on a hair drug test is minimal, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers chronological data: It can show a history of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot register recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug testing typically costs more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the drug metabolite levels found in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests," these tests actually analyze the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
