Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests within Dearborn Heights, Michigan. If a hair or alcohol test is required, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we have centers across numerous cities nationwide to carry it out. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the head or body. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or feature other tailored testing services.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more popular method for drug testing. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-drug tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation rely on these tests due to their superior detection window, typically lasting up to 90 days, under observation ensuring minimal cheating chances. However, urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent drug usage within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of substances by embedding indicators within the hair's growing strand. By collecting hair near the scalp, one can achieve an approximately 3-month detection period for alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, making it an ideal portion for testing and validation. For EtG, additional assays, or tests surpassing 10 panels, a collection of 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is suggested for precise weighing of the sample. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair might be substituted. By head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory workflow of processing a drug testing result includes four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a specimen into a lab’s procedures. This step confirms the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any missing data entries absent from the electronic custody documentation.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for drug consumption. Though Screening effectively excludes drug usage for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Any specimens testing preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

When a test indicates a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. During this phase, substances are isolated from hair at lower concentrations compared to alternative methods (e.g., urine or saliva), presenting hair drug testing as the most intricate methodology.

Confirming any positive screening findings involves methodologies like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive specimens undergo cleansing before confirmation as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited both under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug analysis can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine analyses which have a briefer detection span.
  • Low susceptibility to manipulation: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to deceive, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Historical data provision: This method can reveal a timeline of drug consumption over time, not restricted to recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Detection of drugs in hair generally requires 5-7 days post-usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair pigmentation and individual hair growth differences can influence the presence of drugs in hair strands.

Note: While sometimes termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
