Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Elkton, Michigan. For those in need of a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair analysis, with testing centers in cities across the nation, offering hair tests that require at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair. Analyze hair samples for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or create tailored testing solutions.

With the rise in hair follicle drug testing, employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are increasingly selecting this method over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug analyses are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies and judicial systems. The key advantages of hair follicle tests are their extended detection period of up to 90 days, an observed collection, and high resistance to tampering. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use, within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has been recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected adjacent to the scalp, hair offers up to nearly a 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively tough to adulterate, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal steps in lab processing for a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial step of incorporating a sample into the lab's system. This process involves verifying that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary rapid check for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient technique to rule out drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to hold validity in a court setting. Samples presumed positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair from the initial sample is extracted and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can reflect a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
