Accredited Drug Testing provides exhaustive hair follicle drug testing services in Sandusky, Michigan. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, and we boast testing facilities in all cities Nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, hair samples should be 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown of the head, though body hair can also be used. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailor-made testing options.

In recent years, drug testing methodologies have increasingly included hair follicle tests. This type of drug test is being requested by many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts, who favor it over the conventional urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers utilize hair follicle drug tests due to their primary advantage: an extended detection window of typically 90 days, administered in a strictly observed collection, making cheating almost impossible. Nonetheless, for screening drug use within a 5-day window, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are increasingly valued for identifying substance use. By incorporating biomarkers in its fibers, hair provides an extensive history of alcohol and other substances. When collected near the scalp, it can show traces of alcohol and drugs for up to three months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, ideal for testing and confirmation. For EtG, extra tests, and more than 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg is advised. The specimen should be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. Scalp hair specifically references hair on the head, while body hair refers to other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage involving the integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This stage verifies proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data not incorporated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as the preliminary check for substance abuse. Although cost-effective in excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be validated for legal acceptance. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If results are positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. In this stage, the concentration of drugs extracted from hair is significantly lower than other methodologies (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging method.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initial positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as required. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficult to falsify: Hair drug tests are hard to tamper with, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical data provision: They can outline a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test itself analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
