Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Ellsworth, Michigan. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol assessments, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair-based testing, with centers available across all U.S. cities capable of performing hair tests. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair are required for testing. Hair samples can be analyzed for substances, including drugs, alcohol/ETG, or through other custom testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug screening. Many organizations, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine testing. Hair tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance substance policies, legal authorities, and those on probation. The main advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its extended detection timeframe—up to 90 days—gathered under observation, making it extremely difficult to tamper with. However, for detecting recent usage within the past five days, urine tests remain the preferred option due to their accuracy.

What it is, How it works

The process of hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting use of drugs and alcohol. The hair strands capture biomarkers during growth, offering a long-term record of substance intake. When the hair is cut close to the scalp, the detection window for substances could extend up to 3 months. Collecting hair is straightforward, tampering is relatively harder, and it can be transported without issues.

A specimen of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp can provide 100mg, which is the desired quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG in addition to tests with over 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample is suggested. Should scalp hair not be accessible, a similar volume of body hair can be used. For head hair, we specify scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal phases in the laboratory process of a drug test result involve Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a specimen into a laboratory's management system. This includes confirming the secure sealing and shipment of the specimen, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug usage likelihood in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples considered positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample be considered positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, substances are withdrawn from the hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug tests the most complex to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is carried out utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Any samples having presumptive positive results are cleaned as needed prior to confirmation. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests possess the ability to identify drug intake for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a more limited detection range.
  • Challenging to feign: The difficulty in cheating a hair drug test enhances the reliability of results.
  • Yields historical consumption patterns: Offers an account of substance usage over time instead of signifying recent usage only.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs become traceable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expenses: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other forms of drug tests.
  • Inconsistent results: Attributes such as hair color and individual growth variations can influence the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", in actuality, the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
