Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Elmira, Michigan. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our specialty lies in hair testing. With diverse testing centers located nationwide, we can conduct your test. With at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body, we can carry out testing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with other tailored options.

A spike in hair follicle drug tests has marked recent trends in drug-testing methods. Employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse experts now demand hair drug testing over traditional urine testing. Used by zero-tolerance employers, legal systems, and probation affiliates, these tests provide a broader detection window—up to 90 days. Conducted under direct observation, they are nearly foolproof. For drug use within five days, however, urine tests remain the best option.

What it is, How it works

The practice of hair testing has emerged as an effective means for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers in hair strands capture long-term biomarkers, giving insight into a history of alcohol and drug usage. When the hair is collected near the scalp, it can reflect substance use over an estimated 3-month timeframe. Hair collection is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A sample consisting of a 1.5-inch length of approximately 200 hair strands, comparable to a #2 pencil in width, yields 100mg, an optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG assessments, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, it is advisable to gather 150mg of the sample. The specimen should be accurately weighed using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is absent, an equivalent portion of body hair can be utilized. When indicating head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a specimen within the lab's framework. It involves checking the appropriate sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and fulfilling any supplementary data entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial assessment for potential drug abuse. Although Screening efficiently rules out drug use in most cases, a positive outcome requires verification for legal admissibility. Presumptively positive samples from Screening necessitate confirmation through secondary analysis.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation for any positive results from Screening is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before Confirmation, as required. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized following the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests have a detection capability of up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, enhancing accuracy in results.
  • Tracking past usage: These tests provide insights into patterns of drug use over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Detection of drugs in hair requires approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
