In Elsie, Michigan, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug analysis. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, we specialize in hair testing and have centers nationwide capable of conducting it. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored options for testing.

Lately, the process for conducting drug screening often entails a hair follicle test. Numerous employers, courts, and substance abuse authorities now opt for hair tests as opposed to the default urine test. Hair testing is favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probationers. It is advantageous because of its extended detection of drug usage, which can register up to 90 days, involves supervised sample collection, and is nearly impossible to falsify. Yet, for recent drug usage within 5 days, urine tests retain their precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a significant timeline of substance use, as biomarkers become embedded within the hair strand as it develops. When acquired near the scalp, hair can present an observation period of up to 90 days for drugs and alcohol. This method is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirming tests. For testing enhancements, such as EtG and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advocated. It’s advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be absent, a comparable quantity of body hair can be utilized. Head hair specifies only scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (e.g., facial, underarm).

Process Overview

Key stages in laboratory testing of a drug sample include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of integrating a sample into the lab's system. This phase ensures proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and accomplishes any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary and economical approach to determine drug presence. However, a positive screening necessitates verification to be court-admissible. Presumptive positive results from Screening require follow-up confirmation.

When a sample tests positive initially, more hair is taken from the original specimen and processed for Extraction. In this phase, the concentration of drugs withdrawn from hair is significantly lower than that of urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing notably challenging.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive result are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes inspection under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for as long as 90 days, contrasting with the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: It’s quite challenging to deceive a hair drug test, contributing to its accuracy.
  • Historical data provision: It reveals a usage pattern over time, as opposed to only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to be detected in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is usually pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Despite common reference as "hair follicle tests", these tests assess the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
