Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Engadine, Michigan. Specializing in hair tests, our facilities across all cities Nationwide are equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body areas can be used. Hair analyses can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often select hair tests over urine tests. Hair tests suit organizations with zero-tolerance policies, judiciary systems, and people under probation. The main advantage is a longer drug-use detection window, reaching up to 90 days, obtained via an observed process and nearly impossible to alter. However, for detecting recent use within 5 days, urine testing remains accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective approach for identifying alcohol and substance use. Hair retains a comprehensive record of drug and alcohol presence by embedding biomarkers within the strands during hair growth. Sampling hair near the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol consumption over an estimated three-month period. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch snippet of around 200 hair strands (approximately as thick as a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, considered the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG testing, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. Using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for a drug test encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample enters a laboratory's workflow. This phase involves confirming the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addressing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial rapid evaluation for potential drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage for most samples, only a positive result that undergoes confirmation holds legal admissibility. Samples flagged as presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If the Screening phase indicates a presumptively positive sample, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction stage. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a complex process.

Confirmation of positive screens is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. Samples identified as presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can verify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a narrower detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Presents historical insight: It portrays drug use trends over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs typically become detectable in hair 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome variation: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand above the scalp rather than the follicle beneath it.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
