Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Falmouth, Michigan. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing, with facilities across the Nation to conduct tests. Usually, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Hair tests offer analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other personalized testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a common method for drug analysis. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts often favor these tests over standard urine tests. Companies with strict no-drug use policies, courts, and probation programs use hair tests. Hair follicle tests are favored due to their longer detection window, typically up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it hard to manipulate the results. However, for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair specimens have become recognized as an effective method for identifying the usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair traps biomarkers within its fibers, offering a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and other drug usage as it grows. Collecting hair close to the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol consumption within an approximate three-month period. Collection is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) from the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, which is optimal for initial testing and further validation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate weighing. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used instead. 'Head hair' specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' encompasses all other types (like facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The lab examination of a drug test comprises four critical procedures: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the primary process of entering a sample into the laboratory’s tracking system. This step confirms that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers an economical approach to dismiss drug usage for most samples, legally valid evidence requires confirmation of any positive results. Samples with initial positive results in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Drugs are extracted at significantly lower concentrations than those found in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), positioning hair testing as a more challenging process compared to others.

Confirmation for any positive result detected in Screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS procedures. Presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined based on the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guideline and compliant with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Lengthy detection period: Hair drug tests can unveil drug use for up to 90 days, a stark contrast to urine tests with a shorter detection window.
  • Resistant to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test proves highly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronological data: It offers a historical pattern of drug usage, rather than just snapshots of recent activity.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent intake: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the assessment actually examines the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Falmouth, MI, hair testing is preferable to urine tests due to its enhanced detection capabilities. Unlike urine tests, which typically cover shorter periods, hair tests provide a more comprehensive overview of drug use. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
