Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Farwell, Michigan. If you require a hair or alcohol test, our forte is hair analysis, with testing centers available nationwide, including all cities. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific testing requirements.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a favored method. A multitude of employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts prefer this test over the traditional urine test. It's ideal for those with strict drug policies, probation terms, or court mandates. The main advantage is its prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, making it virtually tamper-proof. Conversely, to screen recent drug use within a 5-day period, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair for testing is recognized as an effective approach for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged timeline of alcohol and substance intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered close to the scalp, hair offers nearly a 3-month detection timeframe for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil), will yield 100mg of hair, optimal for screening and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We advise measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When referring to head hair, we denote scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process of a drug test result involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a sample in the laboratory’s setup. This process involves confirming the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-effective measure to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive finding needs confirmation for court acceptability. Samples suspected as positive in Screening necessitate further verification.

Should a sample appear positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Verification of any positive Screening result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection duration.
  • Difficult to subvert: It is exceedingly challenging to bypass a hair drug test, yielding more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It illustrates a drug use trend over time, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5–7 days after usage.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Attributes such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
