At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer thorough hair follicle testing services in Fife Lake, Michigan. Whether it's for drugs or alcohol, our specialty is hair-based tests, and we have centers across the nation to meet your testing needs. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair length is required, but body hair can also be used. Options are available for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized configurations.

Recently, hair follicle testing has increasingly been incorporated as a standard drug screening method. More and more employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors are opting for hair tests over urine analysis. Companies with strict no-drug policies, as well as courts and probation departments, frequently use hair tests. These tests offer a longer detection span, up to 90 days, are administered under observation, and are difficult to manipulate. Despite this, urine tests remain the gold standard for detecting very recent drug use within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Company: Accredited Drug Testing

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective approach for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a record over an extended period for substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, such hair can show a detection window of nearly 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to obtain, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample containing around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the closest part of the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG extensions and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the laboratory process of producing a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entry that isn’t provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for substances of misuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient method for excluding drug use in the majority of cases, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in court. Every sample that tests positive during Screening requires further verification.

When a sample tests likely positive at the Screening stage, more hairs are selected from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most complicated methods to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed as needed before confirmation. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes examination under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests that have a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely tough, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand, not the underlying hair follicle

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing holds several advantages over traditional urine testing, especially in Fife Lake, MI. One major benefit is the accuracy in detection, as hair tests cover a longer period, reducing chances of missing any substance usage. While urine tests can be suitable for detecting recent drug use, hair tests provide a full picture of an individual's habits, making them more comprehensive and reliable.

The reliability of hair testing is enhanced by its tamper-resistant nature. Unlike urine tests, where adulteration is a common issue, hair samples are much harder to alter. This aspect ensures trustworthiness and a higher likelihood of unbiased results, offering peace of mind to employers and practitioners.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Fife Lake, MI, benefit significantly from the extended detection window that hair follicle testing offers. Unlike traditional testing methods that cover a limited timeframe, hair testing can map drug usage over the course of up to 90 days. This gives employers a detailed perspective on an individual’s long-term habits, which is invaluable in maintaining a drug-free environment.

The ability of hair follicle tests to cover such a wide detection period provides unmatched insights for those monitoring an employee's substance history. It helps in identifying persistent patterns of abuse, efficiently assisting in making informed decisions regarding hiring and maintaining workplace safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the standout features of hair follicle testing in Fife Lake, MI, is its tamper-resistant nature. The difficulty of altering hair samples significantly reduces the risk of adulteration seen in other test types like urine analysis. This characteristic ensures that the outcomes are reliable, thereby enhancing the credibility of the results.

The assurance that hair-based tests provide is highly valuable for employers and authorities aiming to uphold zero-tolerance policies against drug abuse. The tests are conducted under strict observation, making it virtually impossible for individuals to alter samples or manipulate results, guaranteeing accurate detection.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
