Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle tests in Frankfort, Michigan. If you require drug or alcohol hair testing, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert in this field, with facilities Nationwide where hair tests can be conducted. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on your head or body is typically necessary. These tests are effective for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other specific evaluations.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists increasingly prefer these over urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, legal courts, and probation officers use this method due to its extensive detection window, observed collection procedure, and resistance to tampering. It can detect usage for up to 90 days, though urine tests remain superior for detecting recent use.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has been established as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands maintain a historical record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, hair offers up to about a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair samples are easy to gather, hard to alter, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp can supply 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirming results. For EtG testing, add-ons, or more extensive panels above 10, 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for drug test results includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where the sample is processed into the laboratory's system, ensuring proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any additional data entry required beyond what an electronic chain of custody system provides.

Screening is used for an initial assessment for drug use. Though Screening efficiently rules out drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples presuming positive during Screening do need secondary confirmation.

For presumptive positives in the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair in much smaller concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, which is why hair drug testing is complex.

Any positive result from Screening is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation standards of ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests track drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Cheating is difficult: Hair drug tests are highly reliable due to the challenge of tampering.
  • Tracks usage patterns: It reveals patterns of drug use over periods, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become noticeable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other test methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", this test analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Outshines Urine Tests in Frankfort, MI? Unlike urine tests, hair follicle testing boasts superior detection accuracy, making it a preferred choice for employers and courts. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
