Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Free Soil, Michigan. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, look no further. Our specialty lies in extensive hair testing, and we boast facilities in cities nationwide, ready to conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair tests are analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing requirements.

In recent times, drug testing methods often include hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now favor hair drug tests over traditional urine screenings. Hair follicle tests are employed by companies with strict no-drug policies, legal entities, and individuals under probation. The main advantage of this test is its extended detection period, up to 90 days, accompanied by an observed collection process that is almost impossible to tamper with. However, when testing drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When retrieved near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is ideal. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a similar amount of body hair can be taken. When we refer to head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process involves verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening involves a preliminary swift inspection for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use on most samples, a positive screen needs further verification to be legally admissible. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves drawing out drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug testing is a more complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with preliminary positive results undergo washing before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is extremely hard to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring greater accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical data: It can reveal a drug usage pattern over time, not only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can alter the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
