Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis services in Garden City, Michigan. For those in need of hair or alcohol testing, our expertise lies in hair assessments, with centers across the country equipped to perform these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific requirements.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a standard in drug screening processes. More and more employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists are leaning towards hair drug tests over traditional urine assessments. Employers enforcing stringent drug-free policies, courts, and probation services utilize hair tests. The key advantage is the extensive detection window of up to 90 days, with collection done under supervision, making it nearly fraud-proof. For recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests still hold higher precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair Testing Overview

Hair testing has emerged as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands encapsulate biomarkers within their fibers as they grow, offering a historical record of substance use. When hair is harvested near the scalp, it can present a detection time frame of approximately three months for alcohol and various drugs. The process of hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and hassle-free to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil), yields about 100mg of hair, making it ideal for screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advised. It is suggested to use a jeweler's scale to measure the sample weight. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes other hair types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for drug test results involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's database. This includes verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry tasks not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary examination for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive finding requires confirmation to be accepted in legal settings. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening necessitate secondary verification.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of performing hair drug screening.

Positive Screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The full laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection durations.
  • Hard to falsify: Manipulating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Captures historical use: The test can outline patterns of drug usage over time, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outshines urine testing with its extended detection periods. While urine tests are limited to recent usage, hair tests can reveal drug use over months, ensuring a thorough understanding of an individual's history.

With hair testing, the chances of sample tampering are minimal compared to urine tests, providing peace of mind with every result. This makes it a more dependable method, especially valuable for employers prioritizing strict drug policies.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Garden City, MI

The hair follicle testing method can detect drug use for up to 90 days, offering an inclusive overview of substance use patterns. This extended window allows employers to assess long-term habits rather than just recent usage.

With such lengthy detection capabilities, companies can make informed hiring and employment decisions, knowing they have a complete understanding of an individual's substance history over the previous months.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The hair follicle testing process is inherently resistant to tampering and adulteration. Unlike urine tests, which can be easily manipulated, hair tests ensure that samples remain uncontaminated and true to the individual's actual usage.

This reliability and resilience against tampering make hair follicle testing a trusted choice for employers and legal authorities, safeguarding the integrity of the testing process and results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
