Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Genesee, Michigan. If a hair drug or alcohol evaluation is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with facilities nationwide capable of administering the test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are necessary for testing. Hair analyses can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

In recent times, the trend in drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. Employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse experts often mandate hair analysis over traditional urine testing. This method is favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers. Its primary advantages include a protracted detection timeframe—generally up to 90 days—utilizing a supervised collection process that is notably tamper-resistant. Nonetheless, urine tests remain most precise for detecting recent usage within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When taken from close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of roughly 3 months for identifying alcohol and substances. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

A sample sized at 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (resembling the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is advised. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair may be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we refer explicitly to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This step verifies the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drug use. While Screening offers a cost-effective means to dismiss drug usage in most cases, a positive result necessitates further confirmation to be deemed valid in legal settings. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening do require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is flagged as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, drug elements are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), hence making hair drug testing the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening results is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positives undergo necessary washing. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with narrower detection periods.
  • Challenging to falsify: The difficulty in deceiving a hair drug test increases result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Can't identify recent consumption: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can be influenced by hair color and personal hair growth rates.

Note: Despite commonly being called "hair follicle tests", this test actually focuses on analyzing the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Genesee, MI, hair follicle testing emerges as a superior alternative to urine testing due to its enhanced detection accuracy. Hair analysis can identify drug use over a longer timeline, capturing substance usage patterns that urine tests may miss. Consequently, employers gain a fuller picture of an individual's drug history.

Moreover, hair testing's reliability reduces the likelihood of false negatives often encountered with urine testing. This steadfast accuracy fosters greater trust in the testing procedure, assisting in upholding strict drug-use policies and ensuring workplace safety.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing in Genesee, MI, delivers unmatched insight into long-term substance use. Capable of detecting drug usage up to 90 days in the past, it provides employers with a comprehensive view of an individual's habits, far surpassing the capabilities of traditional methods.

This protracted detection period ensures that employers are not only informed about recent consumption but also habitual use, enhancing decision-making processes when hiring or monitoring current employees. It aids in maintaining a healthy and compliant workplace atmosphere.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Genesee, MI, hair follicle testing is renowned for its tamper-resistant nature, significantly reducing sample adulteration risks. This testing method stands robust against manipulation, providing results that are both credible and difficult to dispute. Unlike urine tests, there's no easy way for individuals to alter or affect outcomes.

The stringent collection and analysis procedures of hair testing eliminate opportunities for tampering, ensuring that results reflect true substance use history. This reliability is essential for maintaining integrity and trust in drug testing practices.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
