Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examination services in Grand Rapids, Michigan. If a hair drug or alcohol analysis is required, we specialize in hair diagnostics and offer testing facilities in cities across the nation capable of conducting these exams. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or support other personalized hair testing needs.
In recent years, the approach to performing drug testing increasingly involves hair follicle assessments. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair analysis over standard urine testing. Hair follicle exams are favored by organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals. The main advantage of this method is the extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, which is observed during the collection and is highly tamper-proof. However, to assess substance use within the last five days, urine tests remain accurate.

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a repository for long-term data on drug and alcohol usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the strands that grow. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for substances. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easy to transport.
A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary assessments, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is recommended. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair signifies all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).
Process Overview
The laboratory process of deriving a drug test result includes four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning is the initial phase of inputting a sample into a lab’s system. This step covers checking if the sample is sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and completing any further data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening consists of an expedited preliminary test for drug abuse. Though Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug use on most samples, a confirmed result is needed for legal permissibility. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening require additional confirmation.
When a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from the hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing a challenging methodology.
Confirmation of a positive screen involves using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positives undergo a washing process before confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accredits to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Note: Although referred to as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.
