Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair testing, with centers in every city Nationwide ready to conduct hair tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body for analysis. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing scenarios.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly favor hair follicle drug tests. Employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse specialists frequently request hair drug tests rather than conventional urine tests. Employers maintaining zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation-governed individuals often opt for hair follicle testing. Its primary advantage is a significantly extended detection timeframe, often up to 90 days, collected under observation, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is acknowledged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When clipped near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and uncomplicated to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair may be collected. Note that head hair pertains exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four fundamental phases in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This involves confirming proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional manual data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires validation for court admissibility. Any samples tentatively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or saliva), highlighting why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All tentatively positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Hair drug testing benefits:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests that have a more limited detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is extremely challenging to cheat a hair drug test, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical information: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair in approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the testing process analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Grosse Pointe Shores, MI, hair follicle tests surpass urine tests due to their enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests provide only a short detection window, hair tests retrieve drug use history for up to 90 days. The superiority of hair follicle testing in Grosse Pointe Shores, MI is evident in its ability to detect drug use that urine tests might miss. This thorough method ensures a deeper analysis of substance use patterns, reducing the risk of overlooking important data and enhancing the credibility of the test results.

Extended Detection Window

In Grosse Pointe Shores, MI, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window, making it a valuable tool for employers. Unlike short-term detection with urine tests, hair tests unveil drug use for up to 90 days. Such an extended timespan gives a more complete view of a person’s substance use history, crucial for making informed decisions.

This method in Grosse Pointe Shores, MI allows employers to better understand an applicant or employee's long-term habits regarding substance use. The capacity to detect drug use over three months helps identify consistent patterns, fostering a safer and more informed workplace decision-making process.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
