Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle analysis for substances in Hartford, MI. Our specialized services cover alcohol and drug assessments countrywide, ensuring accessibility with our tests available everywhere. The requirement is 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair, useful for analysis in most situations, covering drugs, alcohol/ETG, or specialized testing formats.

Recently, hair follicle testing has gained prominence for its efficiency in drug assessments. This method is increasingly preferred by employers, legal systems, and professionals over traditional urine tests. With hair tests, zero-tolerance policies gain effectiveness, courts get reliable results, and probation conditions are closely monitored. The key advantage is its extended detection duration of up to 90 days, making it challenging to manipulate. However, for determining recent use within five days, urine tests still hold the edge.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of substances by embedding markers within the strands of the growing hair. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly 3-month detection period for substances. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil diameter) closest to the scalp provides 100mg, the optimal sample for analysis. For EtG, extensions, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, the same measure of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The four core steps in the lab analysis of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially processing a sample into the lab’s system. This covers ensuring that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not supplied through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary swift test for illicit substances. Although Screening is an economical method to dismiss substance use in most samples, a positive result must be verified to be permissible in legal settings. Any samples showing initial positive results in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample tests positively in the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and set aside for Extraction. In this stage, substances are extracted from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result during Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with preliminary positive results are cleansed prior to confirmation as deemed necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection duration.
  • Hard to deceive: Passing a hair drug test is challenging, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Delivers historical data: It offers an overview of drug use over time, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug exams typically come at a higher cost compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
